San Franciscos Washington Square Park is one of the cities oldest parks, dating to 1847. It may be hard to believe today, but the area was originally a ranch, owned by Juana Briones who grew potatoes and raised cattle here. She was also a traditional medical practitioner, a Curandero. She is considered the Mother of San Francisco for personally helping to develop the city. She then went on to help develop the city of Palo Alto. This bench with plaque in Washington Square Park is to commemorate the work of Juana Briones. As seen 5 June 2024.
