This is a fall photograph of the St Lucie Cherry, also called the mahaleb cherry. Unlike the varieties of cherry most people are familiar with, the St Lucie cherry fruit is bitter when ripe, so not very tasty. The seeds, however, are used in Turkey as a spice that has a flavor close to that of bitter almonds with some hint of cherry.
