The monastery was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon, for which a plan of Moscow was to be re-created set of the holy places in Palestine. This is not the first attempt to transfer the image of the Holy Sepulchre, associated with the shrines dear to every Christian, on Russian soil.
