Our major exhibition presents key moments from Abramovic career through sculpture, video, installation and performance.Works such as The Artist is Present will be strikingly re-staged through archive footage while others will be reperformed by the next generation of performance artists, trained in the Marina Abramovi? method. Abramovi?’s retrospective at the Royal Academy is relentless. Shockingly, it is the first retrospective to be given to a female artist in the institution’s history. Then there’s Abramovi? and her partner, Ulay, slapping each other’s faces, screaming at one another and performing a dangerous balancing act with an archer’s bow and arrow. In other circumstances, the extreme games these two accomplices once played might have led to the courts, at the very least.
