Shulamit Aloni was a tireless and sometimes controversial advocate for womens' rights, human rights, and separation of religion and state. Here she stands with her female colleague and government minster, Ora Namir, at a ceremony at Beit Hanassi or President's Residence in Jerusalem, Israel, for the presentation of the in-coming government on July 14, 1992. Aloni was advocate from the 1970s for dialogue between the Israeli government and Palestinians in the occupied territories. In that capacity she was a Board Member of Yesh Din, an activist organization focusing on this problem. A longtime Member of the Knesset or Israeli Parliament, she was founder of the Ratz or Citizens Rights Party, leader of the progressive Meretz Party and Minister of Education and later, Minister of Communications and Science and Culture.
