Then longtime legendary Jerusalem mayor, Teddy Kollek, right, and Speaker of the Israeli Knesset Shlomo Hillel observe a solemn ceremony for Israel`s fallen soldiers, Remembrance Day, in the capital on May 9,1986. Hillel, a recipient of the Israel Prize, played a significant role in organizing the mass exodus of Jews to Israel from his native Iraq and began the process which brought virtually the entire Ethiopian Jewish population to Israel decades later. Kollek labored mightily to keep the peace in the capital during a period of great growth and expansion accompanied by rising tensions from 1965 until 1993. Kollek died on January 2,2007 at the age of 95. Hillel died on February 8,2021 at the age of 97.
