Donald Wayne Seldin, MD, is known as the father of Dallas medicine. In January, 1951 he left Yale for a faculty position at the newest medical school in the country, UT Southwestern. He found ramshackle military barracks, a dilapidated brick building, and garbage strewn in front of the entranceway. By 1952 he was the only faculty member. He was the driving force in UT Southwestern becoming world renowned. Today, there are five Nobel laureates at UT Southwestern plus a sixth who got her start there, more than $400 million in annual research funding, and an endowment worth more than $1 billion.
