The monument to Dante Alighieri is located in Piazza Santa Croce, in front of and next to the Basilica of Santa Croce. It commemorates the Italian master who was a poet, writer and philosopher. He was the author of the Divine Comedy, considered one of the most important literary works of the Middle Ages. The statue is by Italian sculptor Enrico Pazzi and was erected in 1865. The pedestal contains four Marzocco lions with shields containing the titles of some of Dante’s works.
