The obelisk at the place of execution of the Decembrists. At this place in the Peter and Paul fortress on 13 July 1826, was hung five of the Decembrists: Pavel Pestel, Kondraty Ryleev, Sergey Muraviev-Apostol, Mikhail Bestuzhev-Ryumin and Pyotr Kakhovsky. The penalty was not without a terrific episode - Bestuzhev, Ryleev and Kakhovsky fell from the loop and the second was hanged, contrary to all rules of carrying out executions. On the day of the 150 th anniversary of the Decembrist uprising, in December 1975, at the place of execution was inaugurated a nine meter high memorial obelisk. Authors of the monument were the architects V. A. Petrov, A. G. Lelyakov, sculptors A. Ignatiev and A. A. Dema.
