In 1861, due to the lack of places in the cemeteries of the Lavra, it was decided to allocate a place between the Neva River and the fence of the monastery for burial. A clear plan, broken down into categories, was drawn up by the diocesan architect G. I. Karpov. Since 1868, the cemetery was called Zasoborny, and in 1877 it was named Nikolsky after the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in 1868-1871 according to the project of G. I. Karpov on the territory of the merchant N. I. Rusanov. Among those buried at the Nikolsky cemetery are writers, artists, military figures, and a magazine
