| This area is a popular urban hiking area due to its scenic views and colorful variations. Orange buttes dominate the landscape. The area is situated at the confluence of Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale. Holes and voids known as tafone formed in the arkosic conglomeratic sandstone of the Papago Buttes. The formations consist of mid-Cenozoic debris-flow breccia overlying pre-Cambrian granite. The Saguaro cactus, the largest cactus native to Arizona, is majestic. Palo Verde and dessert fauna are present. |
