As for the game which followed, Rutgers fell behind visiting UMass 21-7 in a season-opening August, 30, 2019 football game at the SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. The defense stiffened and the offense exploded. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights rallied and went on to score 41 unanswered points and celebrated the 150th anniversary of of intercollegiate football by trouncing the Massachusetts Minutemen 48-21 in an NCAA Division 1 FBS matchup.
