| The Rutgers bench was gloomy and bewildered, particularly the defense, falling behind visiting Massachusetts 21-7 in a season-opening August, 30, 2019 football game at the SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights went on to score 41 unanswered points and celebrated the 150th anniversary by trouncing the Massachusetts Minutemen 48-21.
The game had a historic context because 150 years earlier, Rutgers beat Princeton 6-4 in the first inter-collegiate football game which was played in neighboring New Brunswick, NJ in 1869. To the present day, Rutgers is known as the `birthplace of college football.` |
