The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the prehistoric Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. Located 45km south-east of Bhopal, the UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of 7 hills, with over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 km and is one of the world`s largest prehistoric complexes. Bhimbetka rock art is considered to be among the oldest petroglyphs, similar to aboriginal rock art in Australia and the paleolithic Lascaux cave paintings in France.
