The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the prehistoric Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. Located 45km south-east of Bhopal, the UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of 7 hills, with over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 km and is one of the world`s largest prehistoric complexes. Bhimbetka rock art is considered to be among the oldest petroglyphs, some of which are similar to aboriginal rock art in Australia and the paleolithic Lascaux cave paintings in France.
