| Popular band leader Benny Goodman, known as "The King of Swing." playing his clarinet along side his colleagues at the Petrillo Music Shell in Chicago's Grant Park in approximately 1982. Goodman was a jazz pioneer a leading figure during the heyday of jazz, and its variant, called swing, which ruled the roost in pop music in the 1930s and 1940s. Goodman died in his sleep at his apartment , the elegant Manhattan House, on the upper east side, on June 13, 1986, at the age of 77. |
