The founding of the Orthodox Church in America goes back to when eight Russian Monks established a mission in 1794 in Alaska, then still a part of Russia.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral in San Francisco goes back to 1857. Although there were a growing number of Russian and Serbian residents in the city, there were no priests for them, they needed to wait for ships that came from Russia, and borrow their priest.
The churches third building, on Powel Street, was destroyed in the Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Fortunitly the five bronze bells, which were cast in 1888, in Moscow, had already been removed, for repairs. These are the bells we get to see, and enjoy hearing today.
This building dates to 1909.
As witnessed 20 October 2022.
