Silybum marianum, or milk thistle, is used as a supplement for its active compounds, silymarin and silybin, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Historically, it was primarily used for liver and biliary disorders, including protection against poisons and treatment for various hepatitis and liver damage from alcohol or toxins. More recently, its potential uses in oncology include supporting the liver during chemotherapy, preventing side effects, and potentially inhibiting cancer cell growth in some cancers, and it's being researched for conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, and indigestion.
