French Market along Decatur Street New Orleans, LA. Latrobe Park, a small park within the French Market, named for Benjamin Latrobe, designer of the city's first waterworks. Sunken seating, fountains, and greenery make this a lovely spot to relax with a drink served from a kiosk nearby. Sculpted by Charles Le Bourg, The sculpture is painted cast iron which appears to have originally been a fountain. Four female caryatids wearing classical drapery stand under a cupola which rests on their heads. The head of each caryatid is topped by an Ionic capital. The cupola is further supported by the caryatids who raise both arms up over head to grasp the bottom edge of the cupola. The cupola is covered with a fish scale design and topped with a catfish. The four-sided base is decorated by corbels with shells at the top and cattails on the sides. Between the corbels are reliefs depicting tridents and catfish. The sculpture is in the middle of an octagonal flower bed which was formerly a pool.
