Here is a panorama view of the Great Wall at Jinshanling. You can see a branch of the Wall sticking out down into the valley. The branch is called buttress. A road from Mongolia splits before the buttress. Because it was not a main road, the Chinese army didn`t build a trap. Instead, they had a simple solution: They built a buttress and deployed cannons along the buttress. The cannons along the main wall and cannons along the buttree could form cross fire. Even if the enemy had survived the bombardment and started to attack the gates, Chinese army could send a quick response force down the buttress and circle around the enemy from behind. |
