Haemorhous mexicanus. A male House Finch on a snow covered branch. Wintertime. Adaptable. Colorful. Cheerful song. Found all over the United States and Mexico. Their diet consists of all seeds, buds, flowers and berries. They like to forage on the ground and will also flock to bird feeders. Originally native to the Southwest, they were sold in pet shops until it became illegal to do so. The ones that escaped or were released took up residence in the East.
