| Historical landmark Salt Point mine shipping pier posts appear when Cayuga Lake is drained down in autumn to allow for winter spring water runoff. In 1891 the Cayuga Lake Salt Company was formed to mine for salt at the mouth of Salmon Creek in Myers, NY. At 2,300 feet, the mine is the deepest in North America. The mine stretches more than seven miles underground, tapping into a vast salt deposit that stretches from Pennsylvania to Ontario. This small company was consolidated into the National Salt Company, eventually known as National Salt Company in 1899. |
