Daniel Goupil, the sculptor of this bust, writes about it: I wanted to show a mature man in full possession of his abilities, at the height of his art. His beard, by its size and shape, symbolizes both the strength and the flowing, undulating, moving currents present in his works. This fluidity can also be found in the vibrations of his face which emphasize the questioning of his gaze -shaded and protected by the neutral form of a hat. ... I wanted to place the sculpture here out of respect for the sense of solitude, a notion Monet held dear.
