The New Jerusalem Monastery is a male monastery, located in the town of Istra in Moscow Oblast, Russia. The Monastery was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon as a patriarchal residence on the outskirts of Moscow. The monastery walls were built in compliance with the requirements of the fortress architecture of the era. Their total length is about one kilometer, height is nine meters, thickness is up to three meters. The upper part of the wall is a combat move with two rows of loopholes. The wall has two entrance gates, eight towers and the gate Church over the Eastern Holy gate. The architect managed to achieve stylistic unity of the buildings of the fortress wall with other buildings and create a unified architectural ensemble. In continuation of the tradition fortress towers received Palestinian names. |
