The Alley of Sphinxes in Karnak forms a path to the first huge pylon. The path is also called the Sacrificial Path. In total, there are 40 sphinxes, creatures with the body of a lion and the head of a ram. Between the paws of the sphinxes stood figures of Ramesses II in the form of the god Osiris. Archaeologists assumed that these sphinxes were created during the reign of Ramesses II. However, they later discovered that they were carved by Amenhotep III and Thutmose IV. Ramesses II later simply moved them to their current location.Today, there are 40 sphinxes here, but before the construction of the first pylon, this avenue of sphinxes extended to the second pylon, and at that time there were 124 sphinxes. After the construction of the first pylon began, the Egyptians placed 84 sphinxes along the walls of the First Courtyard.
