The second largest cathedral in Bulgaria after the St. Alexander Nevski cathedral in Sofia. The cathedral is a cultural monument with national significance. The first church of the same name built on this spot was erected in the 17th century. On the 9th of December 1884 the church trustees decided to build a new; magnificent temple. The funds for this enterprise were collected as voluntary aid from the entire population of the city (Vidin).
