Joseph Mellick Leidy 1823-1891 was an American paleontologist, parasitologist, and anatomist. Samuel Aloysius Murray 1869-1941 was an American sculptor, educator, and protégé of the painter Thomas Eakins. The statue was created in 1907 and installed in 1929.
