Pictured is a bronze sculpture tiltled `Balto` by Frederick George Richard Roth in Central Park, New York City. It was cast and unveiled in 1925. Balto was a black and white Alaskan malamute who led the last team of sled dogs under musher Gunnar Kasson, who delivered life saving antitoxin serum to the city of Nome, where a diptheria outbreak was threatening the population of 1,439. Twenty teams of about 200 dogs total covered 674 miles to deliver the serum which ended the epidemic which had already claimed five lives.
