Bunches of blighia sapida, known as ackie hang by long stems from a branch of its tree. A three-lobe pink and yellow fruit pods opens exposing three glossy black seeds, and pale yellow aril attached in the center of the pod by thin pink membranes. The other pods are completely closed and must open before harvesting. Hanging at an angle of the opened pod is a stem with ovoid shape paripinnately compound evergreen leaflets.
