Arkadi, which was founded in the 13th Century gained worldwide notice in 1866 when hundreds of independence fighters, their families and attacking Ottoman troops were killed as the defenders detonated the powder store rather than surrender. The monastery is both a symbol of Greek freedom and a place of pilgrimage. |
