Lovett Hall, the iconic centerpiece of Rice University, stands proudly as the first building completed on campus in 1912. Designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram in the Mediterranean Revival style with Neo-Byzantine influences, this long, narrow structure of pink granite, polychrome marbles, and rose-hued brick set the architectural tone for the entire university. Serving as the administrative heart of Rice, Lovett Hall houses important offices like Admissions and the Welcome Center, and its sallyport archway offers a symbolic and literal entrance to the academic quadrangle. Named in 1947 to honor Rice's first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, this historic building with its distinctive striped facades, intricate carvings, and cloistered walkways embodies the university's rich heritage and enduring spirit
