The salt storehouses (German: Salzspeicher) which were built between the 16th and 18th centuries are historic brick buildings next to the Holsten Gate (which one can see in the background). They are seen here from across the river Trave. The salt trade in the Middle Ages confirmed the power of Luebeck as a main player in the Hanseatic League.
