Pictured is a bronze sculpture of Sequoyah by Joel David Nunneley in front of the Helmerich Center for American Research at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The dedication was November 10, 2016. Sequoya, also known as George Gist or George Guess, was a Native American polymath and neographer of the Cherokee Nation. In 1821, he completed his independent creation of the Cherokee syllabary, making reading and writing in Cherokee possible. |
