King John authorised the erection of this tower in 1194. Its purpose was as a prison. since 1377 it has been part of the Duchy of Cornwall. Prisoners were held here from the Middle ages until the 18th century. It was then abandoned and left to fall into disrepair. It is now owned by the National Trust |
