Reagent bottles also known as media bottles or scale bottles are containers made of glass plastic borosilicate or related materials and covered with a special cap or stopper. They are intended to contain chemicals in liquid or powder form for the laboratory and are stored in a cabinet or on a shelf. Some bottles of reagent are yellow (actinic) brown or red to protect light-sensitive chemicals from visible light ultraviolet and infrared radiation which can alter them others are blue (cobalt glass) or uranium green for decorative purposes - mostly vintage pharmacy kits from the century in which a doctor or pharmacist was a prominent figure. The bottles are called "graded" if they have marks on the sides that indicate an estimate (often with a 10% error) of the amount of liquid at a particular level in the container. The reagent bottle is a kind of laboratory glassware. The term "reagent" refers to a substance that is part of a chemical reaction (or materials in between) and "medium" is the plural form of "medium" which refers to the liquid or gas in which the reaction occurs or is a chemical processing tool such as ) flux |
