chhath puja celebration. devotees are performing dandi rituals dedicated to lord sun during the chhath puja festival in kolkata. location : babughat, west bengal, india. date 30th october 2022.according to hindu mythology, “chhath puja” is dedicated to the sun and “chhathi maiya” mother shasthi or usha is celebrated with rigorous and strict manners of preparation. usha and pratyusha are the two wives of the sun, that are considered as the energy of the sun god himself. therefor the first offering, evening arghya is offered to pratyusha, the last ray of the sun god and the morning arghya is offered to usha, the first ray of the sun. in the ancient epic mahabharata, references to worshiping of the sun by draupadi, wife of the pandavas, are found. it was believed that worshiping of the sun would help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and also ensure longevity and prosperity of the family members, friends, and elders. it is also believed that chhath was started by the great danveer (alms giver) karna, sired by the sun god, who became a great warrior and fought against the pandavas in the mahabharata war.both men and women who have wished or wish to succeed in something, take an oath to go to the “chhath ghat” or river bank by lying and saluting on the ground in simple cloth. they start “dandwat pranaam” religious ritual the moment after “chhath daura” religious ritual starts arriving on the ghat river bank with the help of a “kanda” a type of stick easily found in locality or in fields, the devotee draws a round line by lying on the ground with the help of stomach and stretching both hands in “pranaam mudra”. after arriving on the ghat after “dand” the devotee takes a bath in the holy river and worships “chhathi maiya” religious ritual.
