A single Sanderling or in latin Calidris alba, a small and plump wading bird, is standing in the very shallow, wave-washed water over a cracked, exposed mudflat in the Guadalquivir marshlands. This bird is likely in its non-breeding or transitional plumage, identifiable by its pale grey upperparts, pure white underside, and the characteristic short, stout, straight black bill and black legs. Its presence here in Donana indicates a critical stopover point for this Arctic-breeding, long-distance migrant as it forages for small invertebrates.
