Gretna Green is just North of the border between Scotland and England. The first village in Scotland. The law in Scotland allows young couples to be married at the age of 16 without parental consent, unlike England where the age is 18. Traditionally youngsters would run away to Gretna Green to get married elope if they didn`t have that consent and the Blacksmiths shop could conduct the ceremony and hence couples would get married `over the anvil`. Today the same laws apply but many couples still choose to get married without running away for the romance of the setting.
