The star of hope was a german barque, en route from Wilmington, north Carolina, to Liverpool with a cargo of cotton in 1883. Nearing the river Mersey approaches, she found herself in the teeth of a force 10, south westerly gale, and began to founder. The crew of nine abandoned ship, and were rescued by the Crosby lightship. She was timber built in Peterhead, Scotland in 1865 and was 120 feet in length, with a beam of 25 feet. This wreck lies in the sand near Southport, on the Merseyside coast. For many years the wreck lay immersed in a sandbank, and was hardly visible, the salt water preserving her heavy timbers. Depending on tides and gales, determines whether the wreck is visible, or covered by the shifting sands.
