Zion National Park is a United States national park located in the state of Utah, near the town of Springdale. The total area comprises 593.26 km². The park`s main attraction is Zion Canyon, a 15-mile-long, 2,600-foot-deep cleft carved by the North Branch of the Virgin River into red sandstone terrain. Other points of interest are the Great White Throne, the Narrows of the Virgin River and the Kolob Arch. In the area of the Zion and Kolob canyons there are nine geological formations with an age dated to 150 million years, from sedimentations that occurred during the Mesozoic Era. During all that time, the region has been covered by swamps, streams, ponds, lakes, vast deserts, and dry riverbeds. The elevations caused by the Colorado plate raised the region about 3,000 m 13 million years ago.
