| British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher appears to be biting her lip as she stands next to then Israeli Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir, in May, 1986. Thatcher was known to dislike Shamir, perhaps the circumstances intensified her displeasure. The meeting was held in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem nearly 40 years following the bombing of the Hotel, then a British military headquarters, after the British ignored an evacuation warning from Shamir's Lehi fighters who blew up the building, killing scores. Thatcher, who died at 87, on April 8, 2013, was the first standing UK prime minister to visit the Jewish state. |
