A Western swamphen or in Latin Porphyrio porphyrio is captured walking along the muddy edge of a shallow body of waterin the protected wetlands near La Puebla del Rio. This large waterhen is identifiable by its predominantly dark plumage, though the bright red bill and frontal shield—which are characteristic of the species—are not distinctly visible in the shadow. The bird is framed by bright green marsh vegetation, including yellow-flowered irises, with another bird flying in the upper right background.
