Is Moldova really ready to join the EU? If you were to believe the voices of the politicians then yes, but the at the annual May the 9th Victory Day celebrations in the Moldavian capital city, Chisinau, thousands of people tell a very different story. On Saturday May the 9th Chisinau war memorial was flooded with pro-Russian supporters openly displaying the, now ominous, orange and black flags and banners to show their support for the current Russian regime in Moscow. Mingled alongside the second world war veterans, who were proudly displaying their vast array of medals, were members of the general public, of all ages, dressed in Soviet era military uniforms as a reminder, to all present, that Russian influence remains strong throughout the former Soviet countries.
