Of the total American naval forces during World War Two, a mere 1.6% served on submarines. Despite this, the submarines forces were responsible for the sinking of 55% of the Japanese merchant and naval fleets. This record was not without cost, as the Americans lost 23% of their submarines, the 55 subs listed on the plaque. This monument is dedicated to their eternal memory. |
