Syrian Woodpecker Dendrocopos syriacus. A woodpecker species belonging to the Picidae family, 22-23 cm tall, adapted to climbing tree trunks in parks and mixed forests. The male's upper parts are shiny black with a red spot on the nape. His face and neck are white. There are a few white spots on the 3 outer tail feathers. The female does not have a red spot on the nape. It feeds on insects, moths and larvae. When it cannot reach animal foods, it also eats small fruits such as oilseeds and berries. It clings vertically to the trunk of trees and climbs upwards or jumps. It listens to the tree bark by hooking its beak. |
