The White House Department Store was San Francisco`s first department store, having opened in 1854. Originally called Davidson and Lane, the took the name `The White House Department Store` in 1870, their second name change, when moving to this much bigger location and encompassed the four separate buildings. The store finally closed in 1965, sitting vacant for many years. The buildings finally reopened with various stores and restaurants on the ground floors, and parking garage on the upper floors.
