| The Kotor Fortifications (Italian: Cattaro) are a historic defense system that protected the medieval city of Kotor, Montenegro, with its walls, towers, citadels, gates, bastions, forts, cisterns, and a castle. They incorporate military architecture from Illyria, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, and the Austrian Empire. Along with the Old Town, it is part of the 1979 UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Natural, Cultural, and Historical Region of Kotor, and is a significant landmark in Montenegro. |
