A typical Volvox colony consists of a hollow sphere of cells. Each sphere, or coenobia, consists of a single layer of surface cells that are fused together. Each cell is surrounded by a thick mucous membrane that forms a gelatinous layer that holds the hollow sphere together. In some Volvox species, this mucous membrane can fill the interior of the sphere. |
