Built in 1943, the church of São Francisco de Assis, in the region of Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte, is considered a landmark in the history of Brazilian architecture and the first work of expression by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, who became world famous with the construction works in Brasilia. Along with the Casa do Baile, the Casino (now the Pampulha Art Museum) and the Yacht Club, the church makes up the Pampulha Architectural Ensemble, all designed by Niemeyer.
