| Pictured is a yellow-crowned night heron, binomial name Nyctanassa violacia, hunting along the edge of Chokoloskee Bay. Its habitat is closely linked to that of the crustaceans that make for most of its diet, and it tolerates fresh water, brackish water and saltwater. Roughly 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, Chokoloskee Bay is located along Floridaâs Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand Islands. |
